The catalyst pack is the most important part in a hydrogen peroxide rocket engine. You could have everything else perfect, but without a perfect reaction you will not get the power you need. This is a side view of the new penta-metallic catalyst pack for the organic H2O2 (click over the picture to enlarge) In 1999 I invented this catalyst and I was invited to present it in the annual inventors reunion "Meeting of the Minds 2000", I presented there my distillation machine and this new catalyst. In this image you can see the different metals used in this new catalyst pack made with pure salts of gold, rhodium, palladium, platinum and silver , to make the most reactive catalyst ever tested with organic hydrogen peroxide. I have shown a test with side to side reactions between my pentametallic catalyst and the old silver catalyst and the reactions of the observers are WOW! Why I needed a better catalyst pack? All the people working with hydrogen peroxide rockets now are using organic hydrogen peroxide because it is the only form of peroxide available, as all the companies that produce hydrogen peroxide changed their production process from electrolytic to organic anthraquinone auto-oxidation in the late 60´s. This might be a helpful analogy: electrolytic peroxide is like gasoline and organic peroxide is like diesel. The main problem with using organic peroxide as a propellant is that if you use the traditional silver screen coated with Samarium nitrate it is poisoned if the peroxide is stabilized with phosphanate (Dequest). Also, a silver catalyst used in conjunction with organic peroxide melts at a lower chamber pressure than with the electrolytic peroxide. This has been well documented by the man that most knew about hydrogen peroxide rockets, James C. McCormick. I had the opportunity to meet him and I have many of his notes and manuals that he gave me before his death. Born of the penta metallic catalyst pack After two years of daily testing, I invented this new catalyst. This new catalyst alloy is the most reactive catalyst I have ever tested with high strength hydrogen peroxide and is composed of a precise formula of five different precious metal salts, Rhodium, Palladium, Platinum, Gold and Silver. In the picture above (click over the picture to enlarge) you will be able to see the different metal combinations used in this new catalyst. Unlike a traditional silver catalyst, this new catalyst pack needs no peheating to activate it for a fast start. The reaction is instantaneous without wet starts.
